The Central Election
Commission (CEC) and municipality, county and city election commissions released
election announcements of local elections on August 18. In the nine-in-one
elections on Nov. 26, 2022(Sat.), the
polls are open from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. (local time).
The estimated number of electors is nearly 19.3 million, 11,023 local public
officials will be elected, and 17,649 polling stations are expected to be set
up across the whole country. The CEC will mobilize over 300,000 electoral staff
and hope all the staff will make concerted efforts to run this election.
The CEC released the
2022 election announcement for municipal mayors, municipal councilors, county
(city) mayors and county (city) councilors, and municipality; the county and
city election commissions released the election announcement of township chiefs,
township councilors, chiefs of indigenous districts in municipalities, councilors
of indigenous districts in municipalities and chiefs of villages (borough).The
announcement also includes the type of election, the number of seats, the
division of electoral districts, the date of voting, the voting time, and the
maximum amount of campaign spending.
According to the
announcement, Candidate Registration period commences on Aug. 29 through Sept.
2. CEC remind candidates for municipal mayors, municipal councilors, county
(city) mayors and county (city) councilors that property declaration form
should be attached when applying for candidate registration and the property
declaration information of candidates will be exposed online for 1 year from
the candidate list approval date.
Furthermore, in response
to the amendment to additional articles 1-1 of the Constitution of the Republic
of China (Taiwan), which was passed by the Legislative Yuan on March 25, 2022,
the CEC scheduled to hold the Constitutional amendment referendum in
conjunction with local elections on Nov. 26, 2022.
CEC Chairperson Lee
Chin-Yung said, the ROC Constitution has been amended seven times since it was
ratified in 1947 and all passed by the National Assembly; this Constitutional
amendment referendum has the historical signification that citizens exercised
the Constitutional review for the first time. This referendum on a proposed
amendment to lower the citizen rights from 20 to 18.
In particular, CEC call
on citizens over the age of 20, actively exercise their citizen rights, refuse
the temptation of bribery, and have the courage to report bribery, so as to
jointly create a clear and clean democratic politics.
